In the dense apartment fabric of Atakum the mass of a mosque stays low; the job of the minaret is to make that mass visible at city scale. At Kevser Mosque a slender, tall proportion was chosen for exactly that reason.
The shaft is fluted and the surface white. In the Black Sea climate, high humidity and rainfall bear directly on the finish; choosing a self-cleaning coating over paint keeps the minaret clean well beyond the first few years.
Proportion within the urban fabric
For a minaret enclosed by multi-storey blocks, two criteria matter: the ratio of shaft diameter to height, and the relation between şerefe level and the eaves line of the neighbouring blocks. If the şerefe does not clear the blocks, the minaret is not read from beyond its own street.

Does a white minaret finish get dirty over time?
In the Black Sea climate, damp and rainfall cause biological soiling on the surface. Where a self-cleaning, highly water-repellent coating is used instead of paint, rain washes the surface largely clean and the maintenance interval lengthens appreciably.
