İstanbul Mermerciler Industrial Estate Mosque — Twin Minarets
In brief
The two minarets of the mosque of the S.S. İstanbul Mermerciler Small Industrial Estate Building Cooperative were built by Zahan İnşaat in 2023. They rose in step with the reinforced concrete frame of the mosque; the muqarnas şerefe (balcony) rings were cast with our own formwork system and the caps finished in dark metal covering.

Industrial estates form congregations of their own; building a mosque within the estate for tradespeople and workers is a common decision. On this project at the Mermerciler Industrial Estate, the minarets rose on the same programme as the mosque’s concrete frame.
What governed the planning was the manufacturing traffic around the site. Plant and lorries move through an industrial estate all day; concrete pours and crane movements were scheduled around that traffic.
Dimensional consistency across two minarets
What matters with a pair of minarets is that the two read alike. The same set of formwork was used on both, and the şerefe levels were transferred from a common datum with a level. Seen from a distance, the two balconies stayed in line.
Working with cooperatives
On cooperative and association projects, payment usually follows the flow of dues or donations. On such jobs we break the programme into stages from the start and issue a photographic progress report at the end of each one, so the board can account for the work to its members.

What is needed to commission a mosque on an industrial estate or factory site?
Once the plot allocation and planning status are settled, the architectural design and minaret type are decided. On mosque projects inside estates, the item most often overlooked is landscaping and parking; bringing those into scope at the outset prevents a supplementary budget later.
How much difference does a second minaret make?
Not double, since the formwork is reused; but foundation, scaffolding and labour do double. Working from the same set of formwork, the second minaret is completed appreciably faster than the first.
