Melbourne Mosque — A Turnkey Mosque Overseas

Melbourne Mosque was built turnkey by Zahan İnşaat in Australia and handed over in 2024. Everything from architectural visualisation to the structural shell, from the erection of the two minarets to the painted dome decoration and the carved timber mihrab and minbar, was carried out under a single contract. The minaret sections and decorative elements were manufactured in Türkiye, shipped by container and assembled on site.

Building a mosque abroad differs from building one in Türkiye on two counts: part of the material crosses an ocean, and the site crew cannot stay there permanently. Those two constraints shape the plan from the outset. Formwork, minaret sections and decorative pieces are produced in Türkiye and shipped; what happens on site is reduced to assembly and in-place work.
That is the method we used at Melbourne Mosque. The project began with architectural visualisation, the shell and dome rose on site, and the two minarets were assembled from prepared sections. Inside, painted decoration, calligraphy and carved timber fittings tie the building to the classical Ottoman language. The mosque opened for worship in 2024.
How an overseas mosque is planned
The shipping window sets the programme. Miss a container sailing and you have a crew waiting on site until the next one, so the manufacturing sequence is built around the freight schedule.
- Architectural and structural design is coordinated to the regulations of the destination country.
- Every element that carries a motif or needs a mould is made in Türkiye — muqarnas, şerefe (balcony), finial, decoration templates.
- The minaret shaft is prepared in transportable sections and craned into place on site.
- The packing list is numbered in assembly order, so the part you need is on top when the container opens.
- A specialist crew travels out on a set schedule for the painted decoration and calligraphy, completes it and returns.
Interior: painted decoration and calligraphy
Hand-painted decoration was applied to the dome skirt, the drum and the pendentives. There is a radial medallion at the crown, a band of Qur’anic script around the drum and name medallions in the corners. This work starts with a template but does not end with one: on a curved surface the proportion of the pattern is corrected in place, otherwise the motif flattens out at the dome skirt.
Timber fittings
The mihrab, minbar and lectern were produced as carved timber; the calligraphic panels were finished in gold leaf. The lower band of the walls was clad in the same timber, setting a horizontal datum line across the interior — the height of the dome reads more clearly because of it.

Frequently asked questions about this project
How different is commissioning a mosque abroad from one in Türkiye?
The trades are the same; logistics and regulation make the difference. The building is permitted under local codes, part of the material travels by container, and the site crew comes and goes on a set schedule. Plan those three from the start and the total duration is not appreciably longer than a project in Türkiye.
How were the minarets transported and erected?
The minaret shafts were prepared in transportable sections, shipped by container and craned into position one above the other on site. This method removes the long formwork and scaffolding campaign that in-situ casting would require, which is why it is preferred on overseas work.
Do you take on mosque projects in Australia, Europe or elsewhere?
Yes. Besides this mosque in Melbourne we have supplied formwork, finials and design work to Kosovo, Guinea and Germany. Overseas scope can be set up three ways: supply of formwork and decorative elements only, supply with erection support, or full turnkey contracting.
We are a community association — where do we start?
Details of the plot, the congregation capacity you are aiming for and any sketch from a local architect are enough. From those three we produce an outline scope and budget range, then price the freight as a separate heading. On overseas work, showing shipping separately rather than burying it in the tender lets the association read its own budget correctly.
